Advanced Hand Training 6 Months

This post should consist of 100% specialist Hand and Wrist surgery rather than the generality of your parent speciality and should not be a “upper limb” fellowship

If NO then you will need to have completed 6 months of Advanced hand surgery training by the date of taking your exam.

Diploma Supervisor for Hand Diploma

The Diploma Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring  that all module tutors, including themselves, comply with the University of Manchester approval process and complete the BSSH agreement and that the candidate is on track to becoming the equivalent of a Day 1 Consultant Specialist Hand Surgeon with Orthoplastic Hand Experience in Great Britain and Ireland.

 

They should also confirm that they will assist the candidate in accessing appropriate experience in Hand Surgery outside of their parent speciality and exposure to supra-regional specialist Hand surgery (such as Paeds and PNS) as appropriate.

It is anticipated that within a region orthopaedic and plastic surgery departments will work together to deliver the syllabus.

  • Minimum of 62.5% of the tutorials should be delivered face to face in Great Britain and Ireland
  • One consultant should not act as tutor for more than 2 modules. 
  • The diploma consultant supervisor can also be a module tutor

Educational Contract Agreement

  1. Commitment of the candidate to pursue a career in Specialist Hand Surgery
  2. Holds a current GMC/IMC Licence to practice
  3. Has completed 4 years of Higher surgical training in Orth/Plast (ST3-ST6 or equivalent)
  4. Has secured a Dedicated Diploma Consultant supervisor and Module Tutors (all approved by the University of Manchester and completed a Tutor agreement)
  5. Commitment to the Diploma by agreeing to the following educational contract:

Educational Contract:

“By time of applying to sit the exam I will be able to provide evidence of the following in addition to items A-D above

i. Have completed a minimum of 5 years of Higher Surgical training with successful yearly appraisal/ARCP (or equivalent)

ii. Have worked in Hand Surgery for a minimum of 6 months at Senior Higher Surgical Training level (ST7+ or equivalent) AND Have completed a minimum of 6 months Specialist Hand Fellowship in a recognised1 unit

                  NOTE: 6 months of this training MUST be in Great Britain and Ireland

iii. Have gained exposure to Hand Surgery beyond parent specialty during HST or Fellowship2

iv.   Completion of Diploma Record of Coursework book with submitted External assessments (a minimum 62.5% of WBAs and 62.5% of tutorials completed in “Great Britain and Ireland” Face to face.

 

1. “recognised unit” includes TIG Fellowship posts - any other posts should be discussed with the Diploma Director and/or escalation to Committee

2. i.e. a plastic surgeon should have worked with orthopaedic hand surgeons in clinics/theatres/specialty clinics etc and vice versa, or if coming from another surgical speciality should demonstrate experience of all aspects of subspecialty orthoplastic hand surgery
